KUTZTOWN, PA (October 6, 2010)—The Kutztown University women's soccer team shutout Lock Haven, 3-0, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) contest Wednesday afternoon on Keystone Field.(BOXSCORE)
Kutztown is ranked 22nd in the latest National Soccer Coaches' Association of America (NSCAA)/ HendrickCars.com top 25 poll.
The Golden Bears (8-3, 5-3 PSAC) did not waste any time opening up the game and by the fourth minute, KU's Julia DiFerdinando scored, giving the Golden Bears a 1-0 lead. DiFerdinando's third goal of 2010 was assisted by sophomore Kelly Rozembersky.
The minutes continued to diminish but the Golden Bears weren't done yet. In the 41st minute, junior Carolynne Kahl brought excitement to a quiet game by heading the ball in the net off of Rozembersky's perfectly-placed pass. KU led 2-0 at halftime.
Rozembersky was like a guardian angel in the first half as she appeared to be in all of the right places at the right time.
“This is rare for me, but I did what coach asked and it resulted in two assists,” said Rozembersky. “We used our speed and took advantage of LHU's forwards.”
The second half start was identical to the first half. In the 53rd minute, freshman Kaite Oliveri scored her first career goal.
“It feels great,” Oliveri said after her goal gave KU a 3-0 lead. “I want to try to keep the positive momentum going and work hard every day to get better. “We made it our goal to be up 2-0 at halftime and we were. We also made it a goal to score in the first 20 minutes of the second half and we executed that objective too. I think we are improving every game.”
Freshman goalie Casey Behrendt continues to be a key element in the Golden Bears success. Behrendt recorded three saves and her third career shutout. Kutztown defense allowed Lock Haven five shots.
“This was an important three points for us to get at home and I am really happy for the girls,” KU head coach Erik Burstein said. “We got an early goal from Julia on a terrific effort, but then we became a little flat and began creating problems for ourselves. After the half we settled down, began to get back to the basics, and turned in a solid performance."
Kutztown will travel to Slippery Rock (7-3-1, 5-3-1 PSAC) for a crucial conference contest Saturday, October 9 at N. Kerr Thompson Stadium. The match begins at 1 p.m.
