LOCK HAVEN, Pa. -- The Kutztown University swim team broke a number of pool and school records as it swept Lock Haven and California (PA) on Saturday afternoon at Zimmerli Pool.
The Golden Bears (14-1 overall) beat host Lock Haven 135-67 and edged out California 107-95 to extend their winning streak to 13.
Alexandra Crigler (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) set the Lock Haven pool record in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:49.59, while
Steph Jeppesen's (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) 2:23.00 in the 200 breaststroke was also a pool record.
Lauren Malloy (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Catholic) broke a KU school record in the 200 fly with a time of 2:12.38, just surpassing Ashley Singer's 2:12.78 set in 2005.
"The girls had a really good day," said head coach
Tim Flannery. "They hung in there, waiting for their events. When it was their time they did what had to be done."
The turning point of the Golden Bears win over California came in the 500 freestyle, with KU sweeping the top three spots.
Heather Wolkom (Rumson, N.J./Rumson Fair-Haven Regional ) was the first finisher, with a time of 5:20.54. She was followed by
Kerry Choplin (Thorofare, N.J./West Deptford) (5:23.97) and Crigler (5.25.45).
"We knew going into the 500 free that match was a toss-up," said Flannery. "That win pushed us over the edge and got the girls amped up."
Steph Jeppesen (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) was also a first place finisher in the 200 IM, posting a time of 2:11.70.
The Golden Bears win over Lock Haven was the second this season.
The Golden Bears will host their home finale on Saturday January 30 against Millersville starting at 1 p.m. at Keystone Pool.
