McQuade helps Kutztown defeat Lock Haven

LOCK HAVEN, PA (January 10, 2010) – The Kutztown University women's basketball team earned a weekend split by defeating Lock Haven University, 71-50, Sunday afternoon at Thomas Fieldhouse in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover contest. Box score

The Golden Bears (9-4) got the job with defense as they held Lock Haven to 19 points in the second half. Kutztown improved to 5-1 on the road by placing four players in double figures. Junior forward Melissa McQuade led Kutztown with 18 points and six rebounds. Senior Vivian Melvin added 12 points for the Golden Bears, three steals and three assists.

Freshman Ashley Wood and senior center Chauntelle Schroeder scored 10 points each as Kutztown built a 39-31 halftime lead and expanded the advantage throughout the second half.

Senior guard Rachel Wisemiller played a strong all-around game, scoring eight points, grabbing eight rebounds and handing out five assists. Wisemiller punctuated her effort by banking in a 3-pointer from 30- feet as the shot clock expired in the final 30 seconds.

Lock Haven (5-6 overall) was led by Casi Donelan, who scored 11 points.

After scoring a season low 52 points in its defeat at Edinboro, Saturday afternoon, Kutztown made 46 percent of its shots (29-for-63) and held Lock Haven to 29 percent shooting (18-for-62). The Golden Bears trailed, 20-14, midway through the first half before beginning to turn up the defense.

McQuade scored five quick points to give the Golden Bears the lead for good, 29-25, with a jumper and 3-point basket, with six minutes, 35 seconds remaining. For most of the second half, Kutztown kept Lock Haven at a safe distance. Kutztown's slimmest deficit in the second half was six points (39-33).

With Wood leading the way, Kutztown's bench outscored Lock Haven's reserves, 17-15. The Golden Bears won the rebounding battle, 41-38.

Kutztown returns to action Wednesday night when it hosts East Stroudsburg in its PSAC Eastern Division opener beginning at 6 p.m.
