KUTZTOWN, PA (October 30, 2009) – The Kutztown University women's volleyball team kept its momentum going with a doubleheader sweep over Cheyney on Friday night at Keystone Arena. (Game 1 Boxscore | Game 2 Boxscore)
The Golden Bears won their fourth-consecutive match by a 3-0 count, three of which were against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division opponents.
The first match was won by scores of 25-11, 25-9 and 25-9.
Leading the offense was freshman Brittany Harman (Hanover, PA/South Western) (Hanover/Southwestern) with five kills and no errors committed. Catie Leahy (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley) (Collegeville/Perkiomen Valley), Katie Lutz (Greencastle, PA/Greencastle Antrim) (Greencastle/ Greencastle Antrim) and Brittni Speck (Hesston/Huntingdon) each added four kills.
Kimberlee Gomber (Washington, PA/Washington) (Washington/Washington) added 20 assists and Nora Alexander (Plymouth Meeting, PA/Plymouth-Whitemarsh) (Plymouth Meeting/Plymouth-Whitemarsh) led the Golden Bears with nine digs.
In the second match, the Golden Bears combined for 16 service aces, winning by scores of of 25-5, 25-9 and 25-6.
Jamie Celia (Douglassville, PA/Daniel Boone) (Douglassville/Daniel Boone) and Lindsey Smith (Hanover, PA/Delone Catholic) (Hanover/Delone Catholic) tied for a team-high four aces. Celia leads the Golden Bears on the season with 44, Smith is second with 38.
Lutz and Leahy led in kills with six each. Gomber added 15 assists and Dana Wright (Warminster, PA/Saint Basil Academy) (Warminster/Saint Basil Academy) collected 11 assists.
Megan O'Connell (Horsham, PA/Hatboro- Horsham) (Horsham/Hatboro-Horsham) had a team-best 12 digs in the second match.
In the two matches, freshman Kelsea Ashworth (Carlisle, PA/Carlisle) (Carlisle/Carlisle) combined for four kills, four assists and 11 digs.
The Golden Bears have three road matches to close out the regular season. The next match will be Saturday October 31 at 2 p.m. against West Chester. Next weekend the Golden Bears will face Shippensburg and Millersville. KU and each of its three remaining opponents are all in contention for three of the final PSAC East playoff spots.
