Kutztown uses balance to cruise past Shippensburg

KUTZTOWN, PA (October 17, 2009) – The Kutztown University women's volleyball team defeated Shippensburg 3-0 in front of a homecoming crowd of 450 to extend its winning streak to three. (BOXSCORE)

The Golden Bears defeated their Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East rival 25-15, 31-29 and 25-16.

Kutztown (11-9, 4-8) was lead offensively by Lindsay Confer (Wingate, PA/Bald Eagle) (Wingate/Bald Eagle Area, who dominated the court, recording eight kills. Kelsey Nester (Catasauqua, PA/Catasauqua) (Catasauqua/Catasauqua) and Cali Snell (York, PA/York Suburban) (York/York Suburban) contributed six kills each. Overall, Kutztown finished with 28 kills.

Freshman Dana Wright (Warminster, PA/Saint Basil Academy) (Warminster/Saint Basil Academy) had 16 assists and freshman Kimberlee Gomber (Washington, PA/Washington) (Washington/Washington) added nine assists.

Defending their side of the net, Katie Lutz (Greencastle, PA/Greencastle Antrim) (Greencastle/Greencastle Antrim) had four block assists. Katie Miller (Elizabethtown, PA/Elizabethtown) (Elizabethtown/Elizabethtown) added three and Brianna Risch (Coatesville, PA/Coatesville) (Coatesville/Coatesville) Nester, Snell, Confer also tallied block assists.  Jamie Celia (Douglassville, PA/Daniel Boone) (Douglassville/Daniel Boone) had 24 digs and Nester added another 18.

The Golden Bears dominated the first game, sprinting to a 19-8 advantage.

In the second game, the Golden Bears trailed the Lady Raiders, eventually gaining the lead 17-13. The Lady Raiders managed to make it a two point difference, and kept it that way. The Golden Bears found themselves at 29 all before Nester lobbed it over the net for the point. Kutztown managed to gain their winning point after the Lady Raiders lost control of the ball.

Kutztown opened an 18-10 advantage in the third game, never looking back.

Kutztown has seven games remaining in the season. Next weekend, on Friday Oct. 23, they host Lock Haven at 7 p.m. followed by a Saturday Oct. 24 home match against East Stroudsburg at 2 p.m.
