CHEYNEY, Pa. — Stephen Dennis (West Chester, PA/Henderson) (jr. West Chester/Henderson) led four Golden Bears in double figures with 28 points as the Kutztown University men's basketball team took sole possession of first place in the PSAC East with a 75-73 win at Cheyney Wednesday night.
Dave Ben (sr. Coatesville/Coatesville) scored 17, Mark Bower (sr. West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford) had 13 and Andre Woodlin (sr. Philadelphia/Central) added 10 for Kutztown, which finishes the first half of PSAC East play with a 6-1 record, one game ahead of Cheyney, West Chester and Mansfield - all at 5-2.
Tyrone Smith scored 28 points for Cheyney, while Dominique Curry added 12 points and 12 rebounds.
Neither team led by more than eight points in the first half, which ended with a 31-31 deadlock. The largest margin was four points in the second half, which featured seven ties and 15 lead changes.
After Cheyney took a 71-70 lead with 1:10 left, Ben was fouled and hit two free throws with 1:03 remaining to give KU the lead for good.
Woodlin's block on Cheyney's ensuing possession was rebounded by the Wolves, but they turned it over. Dennis sank two free throws for a 74-71 edge with 21 seconds let. Smith missed a 3 for he Wolves and Woodlin iced the game hitting one of two from the line with six seconds left. Curry's layup as time expired accounted for the 75-73 final.
Kutztown hosts East Stroudsburg, looking to avenge its only PSAC East loss this season, on Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
