CLARION, Pa. — The Kutztown University women's basketball team had five players in double figures in an 87-69 win over Clarion in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference crossover game on Sunday afternoon at Tippin Gym.
Melissa McQuade (Pittsburgh, PA/Shaler) (so. Pittsburgh/Shaler) led all Golden Bears (9-2) scorers with 21 points, a day after being held to a season-low four points. McQuade was 9-of-14 from the floor, and brought down nine rebounds, with six coming on the offensive end.
Katie Dovey (Willow Hill, PA/Fannett-Metal) (jr. Willow Hill/Fannett-Metal) added a career-high 15 points, knocking down 3-of-4 shots from beyond the arc. Chauntelle Schroeder (Toronto, Ontario, CANADA/Mother Teresa) (jr. Toronto, Ontario/Mother Teresa Catholic) notched a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
Rounding out the top scoring was Rachel Wisemiller (Hazleton, PA/Hazleton Area) (jr. Hazleton/Hazleton) with 17 points and seven rebounds. Lara Dellegrotti (sr. Berwick/Berwick) netted 12 points, including a six-for-six showing from the foul line and dished out four assists.
KU took only a 38-35 lead to the locker room at half time and held only a seven-point advantage with 8:22 to go in the game. But two key back-to-back 3's by Wisemiller, and solid shooting from the charity stripe down the stretch kept Clarion (3-7) from coming back.
As a team, the Golden Bears shot 51.6 percent from the field, and were 13-of-16 from the free throw line. The defense held the Golden Eagles to only 35.6 percent shooting, including only 17 percent on 3's.
The Golden Bears will host Edinboro in another PSAC crossover match on Sat., Jan. 10 at 1 p.m. at Keystone Arena.
