Pete Smith enters his first season as the head men's and women's tennis coach at Kutztown University in 2024-25.

Smith joins the Maroon and Gold after a successful 17-year run at Ursinus College in nearby Collegeville, Pa. He guided the Bears’ NCAA Division III men’s program for 17 seasons and handled head coaching duties with the women’s program for the last 10 seasons.

During his tenure with Ursinus, Smith won 165 matches on the men’s side and 93 on the women’s. The Bears were members of the ultra-competitive Centennial Conference, where Smith was twice named Men’s Coach of the Year (2010 and 2013).

In 2013, Smith led the Ursinus men to their first and only Centennial Conference postseason berth in program history while capturing a program-record 14 victories (14-7).

Smith took over coaching duties of the women’s program in 2014-15 and found immediate success. The Bears qualified for their first and only CC playoff appearance, won a program-record 14 matches and finished the year ranked 16th in the ITA Atlantic South Region.

The men finished the 2016-17 season 12-7 while landing seventh in the final NCAA Region III rankings and 19th in the ITA Atlantic South Region rankings.

Smith, the winningest coach in Ursinus history for both the men’s and women’s programs, secured top 25 men’s recruiting classes in 2010 and 2014. He coached 13 all-conference players and was the 2016 USTA Philadelphia District College Coach of the Year.

Smith enjoyed a standout tennis and basketball career at Ursinus. He claimed the 1990 Middle Atlantic Conference Singles Championship and earned 50 career singles wins. On the hardwood, Smith scored 1,443 points, which still ranks eighth all-time at the school. He graduated in 1991 with a degree in mass communications and was inducted into the Ursinus College Hall of Fame for Athletes in 2001.
