WORCESTER, Mass. – No. 2 Kutztown continued its undefeated start to the season Sunday, using another complete team effort to shut out No. 8 Assumption, 6-0, and improve to 5-0.
Sophomore
Julia Traynor (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) set the tone early for the Golden Bears, scoring twice within the opening 20 minutes at 12:48 and 18:54. Freshman
Anna Harris (Reston, Va./South Lakes) assisted Traynor's second goal.
The Golden Bears continued to build on their early lead, as junior
Ellie Myers (Denver, Pa./Cocalico) followed her own initial attempt to find the back of the cage less than a minute later, extending Kutztown's advantage to 3-0. Just over a minute later, junior
Marissa Rice (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) added another goal on an unassisted shot.
Graduate student defender
Olivia Kirkpatrick (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra) then netted her third penalty stroke of the season at 26:13, before Harris rounded out the scoring at 33:51 off an assist from Rice.
Assumption (1-3) held Kutztown scoreless over the final 26 minutes of the contest, but the Golden Bears maintained the offensive advantage throughout the matchup. Kutztown outshot the Greyhounds 27-15, including a 20-10 edge in shots on cage, while also holding a 14-10 advantage in penalty corners.
With every Kutztown player seeing time on the field, the complete team effort extended into the goal as well. All three Golden Bear goalkeepers saw action, with junior
Lorelai Lehenky (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) starting the matchup and recording three saves on three shots faced. Sophomore
Tess Adolf (Lawrence, N.J./Lawrence) played the third quarter and stopped both shots she faced, while freshman
Corinne Bull (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) finished the contest in goal with four saves on four shots on goal.
The Golden Bears turn their attention to familiar foe Shippensburg on Sept. 17 at 5:30 p.m. at home at Andre Reed Stadium. The Raiders handed Kutztown both of its losses last season, setting the stage for another highly anticipated showdown.
