KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Junior forward Ellie Myers (Denver, Pa./Cocalico) took a pass from Julia Traynor (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) and finished in front of cage and the defense did the rest as No. 2 Kutztown got the better of No. 1 Shippensburg Thursday evening in a non-conference matchup at Andre Reed Stadium.
 
The Golden Bears (6-0 overall) remain undefeated on the season and defeated their third consecutive ranked opponent, having also taken down No. 7 Saint Anselm and No. 8 Assumption last weekend.
 
It was a bit of a revenge game for KU, which lost its last two games against the Raiders (3-1), both in the postseason last year, one in the PSAC championship game and the other in an NCAA semifinal round contest. These two teams know each other pretty well the last four seasons, having played 10 times since the 2023 season, with Kutztown going 4-6 against Ship, and seven of the 10 games were decided by one goal, with the three others by just two goals.
 
This game will give the Maroon and Gold some positive momentum moving forward and position themselves well for the postseason. But they also know that it doesn't mean a whole lot yet in the grand scheme of things as they beat Shippensburg in their lone meeting during the regular season last year, before the two postseason defeats.
 
Myers goal came off a turnover by the Raiders in their own defensive zone. A backwards pass was stolen by Trainor and then dished off to Myers in front of cage, who cooly slotted the ball past the Raiders' goalie for the game's only tally. Shippensburg threatened in the fourth quarter, recording three penalty corners and two shots on goal, both saved by Lorelai Lehenky (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville), who finished with three saves.
 
The Golden Bears outshot the Raiders 8-4 overall and 4-3 on cage, while holding an 8-7 edge in corners.
 
Kutztown is at Mansfield in another non-conference game this Saturday, Sept. 19, at 1 p.m.
