Singles strength lifts Jefferson over Golden Bears

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Jefferson won 5-of-6 singles matches to rally past the Kutztown University men's tennis team for a 5-2 PSAC victory on Wednesday afternoon.

The Golden Bears (5-8, 0-2 PSAC) gained the upper hand in doubles, where their No. 1 and No. 2 pairings were victorious.

Joaquin Perez (Pachuca, Mexico/Escuela Americana) and Terrell Arejola (Quezon City, Philippines/Southville International School and Colleges) earned a convincing 6-2 win over Nicholas Trebuchet and Quentin Duvinage at No. 2 and the top flight duo of Dang Nguyen (Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam/) and Henrique Rocha (Jaticua, Brazil/Escola SEB Maceio) broke a 1-1 deadlock with a 6-4 triumph over Filip Slavkovic and Matt Cizmarik to put the visitors up 1-0 heading to singles.

Kutztown pushed the Rams (7-6, 2-0 PSAC) in all six flights, sending two to a super tiebreaker.

Patrick Young (Belfast, Northern Ireland/) accounted for the Bears' lone point with a 5-7, 7-6 (4), 10-5 victory over Antonio Mateos Melenchon at No. 3. Perez rallied from a set down to force a super tiebreaker at No. 4, but his opponent, Slavkovic, would prevail 6-3, 2-6, 10-8.

The Golden Bears return to the Keystone Courts to take on Edinboro Friday at 3 p.m.
