LYNCHBURG, Va. – Kutztown University's 4x100-meter relay school record fell for the second year in a row and the Golden Bears produced four program top 10 performances as the two-day Dr. Jack M. Toms Alumni Invitational concluded, Saturday, at the University of Lynchburg.
Â
Michael Fellin (Sheppton, Pa./Marian Catholic),
Daron Haggans (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin),
Sean Singleton (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) and
Kymanni Johnson (Baltimore, Md./Overlea) teamed up to throw down a school record 40.61 and win the 4x100m relay over PSAC rival Slippery Rock by 1.27 seconds. The time was a NCAA provisional cut and bested the former record of 40.68, of which Fellin and Haggans were a part of, from the same meet last season.
Â
Kutztown went on to sweep the relays when Haggans,
Joe Cavalcante (Philadelphia, Pa./La Salle College H.S.),
Ryan Kenneff (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) and
James Washburn (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) captured the 4x400m in 3:19.66.
Â
The relays accounted for two of the Golden Bears' three event wins on the day. Sophomore
Jaydon Witman (Hamburg, Pa./Hamburg) secured the other with the top time among 19 competitors in the 110m hurdles. Witman's 14.58 is the fourth-fastest in program history.
Â
Haggans finished runner-up in a 49-man 200m field with a time of 21.73, while Johnson and Singleton advanced to the 100m final before finishing third and fourth, respectively. Johnson set the eighth-best time in KU history with a 10.70 in preliminary heats.
Â
Washburn set a PSAC cut time in the 400m hurdles to finish third (55.14) and Cavalcante capped a successful day for the Maroon and Gold on the track with a fourth place showing and PSAC cut in the 400m (49.35).
Â
Sophomore
Jake Kelly (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) led the field athletes with a third-place finish in the shot put. The Philadelphian set a new PR with his best throw measuring 16.40m (53-9.75). Kelly remained second on Kutztown's top 10 list, surpassing his former top throw of 16.32m (53-6.50) set just last week at the Shippensburg Keystone Challenge.
Â
Trey Hamlin III (Townsend, Del./Caravel Academy) was a top five finisher in both the long jump championship and triple jump. Hamlin III achieved a PSAC qualifying mark in the long jump (6.92m/22-8.5) to place fourth and leapt 13.34m (43-9.25) to take fifth in the triple jump.
Â
Andrew Szeplaki (Bath, Pa./Northampton), who set the program's pole vault record Friday afternoon, finished fifth in the high jump on Saturday with a top jump of 1.90m (6-2.75).
Â
Kutztown will take next weekend off before resuming its schedule April 11-13 at the Bucknell-hosted Bison Outdoor Classic.
