MURRYSVILLE, Pa. -- Freshman
Ashlyn Phy (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) improved to 4-1 in singles matches this season with a straight set victory at sixth singles, but the Kutztown University women's tennis team dropped a 6-1 non-conference match to California (Pa.) at the Murrysville Racquet Club, Tuesday.
Phy outlasted Gianna Bloom of the Vulcans (7-6) in a first set tiebreaker 7-6 (5), before putting the match away with a 6-3 victory in the second set.
Though Phy was responsible for her team's lone point, the Golden Bears (3-4) battled throughout the day.
Cal was able to put the match out of reach early with a doubles sweep and five straight set wins in singles.
In the top flight match,
Isabela de Nadai (Vitoria, Brazil/St. Paul's School) went back-and-forth with Diletta Maria Mungo before falling 6-4, 7-6 (6).
Kendra Yerger (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) won six games in a 6-4, 6-2 setback against Izabelle Heacox at No. 5.
Tuesday's match was originally scheduled to be played on the Vulcans' home courts but weather conditions forced the teams to take the match indoors. Kutztown will look to rebound in another indoor match on Wednesday, taking on NCAA Division III Saint Vincent at the Greensburg Racquet Club at noon.
