BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's tennis team closed its fall dual season on a high note Tuesday afternoon, earning a 5-2 road victory over Moravian University.
Kutztown got off to a fast start, claiming the doubles point with wins in the top two flights.
Anastassiya Kim (Almaty, Kazakstan/Zerde School) and
Isabela de Nadai (Vitoria, Brazil/St. Paul's School) opened with a dominant 6-1 win over Natalia Smith and Paige Peyton, while the freshmen duo of
Anna Fisicaro (Pitman, N.J./Pitman) and
Myah Marturano (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) secured a 6-4 victory against Kaelyn Balko and Dasha Gencturk at No. 2.
The Golden Bears (4-3) carried the momentum of doubles into singles, where they claimed four of the six matches.
Moravian (2-1) briefly knotted the match due to a retirement at third singles, but KU captured the next three points to clinch the match.
Gabby Gentile (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) put KU back on top with a 6-1, 6-1 straight set victory over Gencturk at No. 6. Kim followed with an equally dominant 6-0, 6-2 win over Smith at No. 1.
At No. 2, de Nadai defeated Balko 6-1, 6-2 to give the Maroon and Gold an insurmountable advantage. Marturano closed the match with a hard-fought victory at No. 4. After dropping the opening set 6-4 to Colette Rollins, the Berks County native won the second set in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (0). With dwindling daylight, a 7-point tiebreaker was played in place of the 10-point super tiebreaker. Marturano emerged with a 7-2 win.
Following the victory, head coach
Pete Smith praised his team's progress throughout the fall campaign.
"I'm really proud of the girls," Smith said. "It was a good win today and a great fall for us. We have really improved. I'm looking forward to the spring season with this team."
The Golden Bears will send representatives up to Bloomsburg this weekend to officially conclude the fall season at the ITA Atlantic Region Championships.
Kutztown will resume its dual schedule Thursday, March 5, 2027, at home against Goucher.
