Golden Bears grab road win at Alvernia

READING, Pa. -- Kutztown University women's tennis evened its record with a commanding 7-0 non-conference victory at Alvernia on Friday afternoon.

The Golden Bears (3-3) ceded just five total games between singles and doubles, making quick work of the Golden Wolves (1-1).

Gabby Gentile (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) and Alyson Witman (Blandon, Pa./Fleetwood) shut out Grace Dobrzynski and Nicolina Schlesser, 6-0, at second doubles before Ryleigh Bohning (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown) and Ashlyn Phy (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) won by the same score over Adelynn Steffy and Jennah DeGout at third doubles to lock down the team point for the Maroon and Gold.

Isabela de Nadai (Vitoria, Brazil/St. Paul's School) and Maddie Gilbert (Cape May, N.J./Lower Cape May Regional) completed the doubles sweep with a 6-2 victory over Jillian Laughman and Jamielyn Kelley at No. 1.

KU was just as dominant in singles, winning the first four flights in straight sets and blanking Alvernia in eight-game pro sets at No. 5 and No. 6.

Gentile beat DeGout 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4, Bohning earned a 6-0, 6-0 clean sweep of Kelley at No. 3 and Gilbert turned back Steffy 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 to clinch the match for the Bears.

A 6-1, 6-0 win from de Nadai against Laughman at No. 1 made it 5-0 in favor of the visitors.

Kendra Yerger (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) defeated Dobrzynski 8-0 at No. 5 and Phy swept Jordyn Ingelido 8-0 at No. 6 to close out the match.

Kutztown will travel to western Pennsylania for a pair of midweek matches during Spring Break. The Golden Bears will face California (Pa.) out of the PSAC West on Tuesday, March 17, indoors at the Murrysville Racquet Club beginning at noon. They'll take on NCAA Division III Saint Vincent on Wednesday, March 18, indoors at the Greensburg Racquet Club, also with a noon start.
