Bowling finishes Mount Shootout in seventh after pair of wins

MOUNT JOY, Pa. – The 23rd-ranked Kutztown University women's bowling team wrapped up competition at the Mount Shootout on Sunday, defeating the Molloy Lions 4-2 and the Mercyhurst Lakers, 4-0, in the final two best-of-seven baker matches at Clearview Lanes.

The Golden Bears (37-21 overall) finished the weekend in seventh place out of 14 teams, dropping its first match against the Lakers, 4-3, before bouncing back for its second win in as many days over the Lions, this time coming in a 4-2 victory after a 188-184 sixth game. KU exacted revenge on its former East Coast Conference rivals, hammering the Lakers in a four-game sweep to return home with a two-match winning streak.

The first Mercyhurst matchup was high scoring on both sides, and while the Maroon and Gold put up three games of over 200 pins, Mercyhurst's five such games powered them up the bracket, where they would fall to No. 20 Bryant in six games. The rematch between Kutztown and Mercyhurst featured a one-pin victory in the first game, followed by dominant wins in games two (289-216), three (243-153) and four (258-204) to secure the sweep.

In between those matches, Kutztown held off a strong Molloy squad, which won the first game and claimed another win in game five before the Golden Bears put the Lions away to advance to the seventh-place match.

Head coach Angela Reynolds sent a lineup of three first-year bowlers, as Ashley Kuster (Virginia Beach, Va./Tallwood), Isabella Hopper (Mifflinville, Pa./Berwick) and Madilyn Bogovic (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cedar Cliff) competed in the second, third, and fifth spots, respectively. Senior Sydney Snyder (Morrisville, Pa./Conwell-Egan Catholic) led off for KU, while sophomore Kamryn Brenneman (York, Pa./Central York) was the fourth bowler for the Golden Bears on the team's 2-1 Sunday.

No. 8 Niagara held off No. 9 Mount St. Mary's for the tournament title, while Fairleigh Dickinson topped No. 22 Duquesne, the latter of which fell from second to fourth in Sunday's competition.

The Golden Bears continue a busy February in Delaware, as it will compete in the Wildcat DII Invitational, hosted by Wilmington (Del.) University, at the New Castle Bowlerama on Friday, Feb. 13, through Sunday, Feb. 15.
