Kutztown ends season with loss to Molloy on Championship Sunday

HACKENSACK, N.J. – The Kutztown University women's bowling team faced a tough road to climb to return to the top of the East Coast Conference Championship for the second straight season, but fell in a best-of-three mega match to the Molloy Lions, 2-1, on Sunday at Bowler City Lanes in Hackensack, N.J.

The Golden Bears (56-29 overall), who entered the weekend with the second seed and at No. 25 in the national rankings, were sent to the elimination bracket in its first contest by the third-seeded Lions on Saturday morning, after Molloy managed to make its way through the newly formatted opening round on Friday. Kutztown reached Championship Sunday with its 2-1 win in an elimination mega match over Adelphi, and thanks to top-seeded Bryant's victory over Molloy, it set up a rematch between the Lions and Golden Bears for the right to face off against Bryant in the final round.

Despite having one of its better overall traditional play performances of the weekend in the opener – consisting of 200 pin games from Kamryn Brenneman (York, Pa./Central York), Isabella Hopper (Mifflinville, Pa./Berwick) and Madilyn Bogovic (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cedar Cliff) – the Golden Bears fell down 1-0 in a 954-935 contest.

The baker round was similarly close, as the first game was a one-pin Molloy win, game two was a 199-all tie, and game three saw Molloy win 190-188 to take a three-pin advantage. Despite being down and having its back against the wall towards the end, KU's 190-pin fifth baker game forced a best-of-seven, third contest after a 964-939 round tied the mega match at one apiece.

Kutztown carried that momentum into a 1-0 advantage in the opening game, and its fourth game was among its highest scoring marks of the weekend. However, Molloy's consistent scoring – one that featured four 200-pin games in a row – and a massive, 244-pin game six victory came in handy as it claimed the contest with a 4-2 best-of-seven game and 2-1 mega match victory to eliminate KU and advance to the championship round.

The Golden Bears' incredibly successful season comes to an end after reaching Championship Sunday for the third time in four seasons and recording at least 50 wins for the fourth consecutive year. It was a mainstay in the National Tenpin Coaches Association's top-25 rankings, appearing in all three midseason rankings and reaching as high as 23rd during its regular season success.

Kutztown saw key contributors earn individual accolades from the East Coast Conference, headlined by Bogovic's historic season earning the first-year kegler ECC Rookie of the Year honors in addition to a First Team All-Conference selection. Brenneman followed up her historic rookie campaign with an equally impressive sophomore season that got her a spot on the All-ECC Second Team, while Hopper – another standout rookie – and senior Sydney Snyder (Morrisville, Pa./Conwell-Egan Catholic) each earned Third Team recognition for their contributions to the 2025-26 Golden Bears.

Although head coach Angela Reynolds will have to oversee change in the Golden Bears' graduating senior class, its core of strong underclassmen provides a good sign for success in seasons to come.
