Golden Bears earn 10 PSAC marks at Sykes & Sabock Challenge

| By:
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Kutztown University men's indoor track & field team enjoyed another successful meet, Saturday, achieving 10 PSAC qualifying cuts, Andrew Szeplaki's (Bath, Pa./Northampton) fourth NCAA provisional mark in the pole vault and a trio of program top 10 times in the 200-meter dash at the Sykes & Sabock Challenge hosted by Penn State.

Szeplaki and Michael Fellin (Sheppton, Pa./Marian Catholic) (60m) were the top placers for the Maroon and Gold on the day with runner-up finishes in their respective events. Trey Hamlin III (Townsend, Del./Caravel Academy) also brought home a top five finish in the triple jump.

Szeplaki, a freshman from Bath, Pa., cleared 5.00m for the fourth time in five meets this winter. His mark of 5.20m (17-0.75) on Saturday was his second-best performance of the season behind only his school record 5.30m (17-4.5) vault at Alvernia in mid-January, which currently ranks second in NCAA Division II. Szeplaki tied Penn State's Tristan McGarrah for the top vault, but McGarrah earned the top spot by clearing 5.20m on his second attempt, while Szeplaki went over on his third and final try.

Fellin ran the third-fastest 60m time in preliminary heats with a 6.77 and followed that up with an even better 6.75 to finish second overall. The returning All-American and school record holder is gearing up to defend his 2025 PSAC championship in the event with three wins and a second-place in four meets this season.

Three KU sprinters set program top 10 times and personal bests in the 200m. Freshman Kymanni Johnson (Baltimore, Md./Overlea) led the way with a ninth-place finish in 22.02, which moved him up to sixth on KU's top 10 list from ninth (22.28). Junior Daron Haggans (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) dropped from sixth to seventh with Johnson moving up but still turned in a PSAC qualifying time and PR of 22.04. Sophomore Sean Singleton (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) is now tied for 10th after putting down a 22.37.

Fellin and Johnson combined for five PSAC cut times, with Fellin setting his in both prelims and finals of the 60m and the 200m (22.12), while Johnson's came in the 60m (6.95) and 200m.

Hamlin III registered another PSAC qualifying triple jump with a best mark of 13.76m (45-1.75) to place fifth among eight competitors. Jaydon Witman (Hamburg, Pa./Hamburg) also repeated as a PSAC qualifier in the 60m hurdles, taking 10th in the 23-man field with a time of 8.41.

Caleb Tryninewski (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) joined Szeplaki with PSAC cuts in the pole vault by clearing 4.45m (14-7.25) to finish 10th.

Kutztown travels to Chester and Philadelphia next weekend for the Widener Indoor Classic. Throwing events will be contested at Widener's Schwartz Athletic Center on Friday, Feb. 13, before the remainder of the meet is contested at the University of Pennsylvania's Ott Center on Saturday, Feb. 14.
