HACKENSACK, N.J. – With a storm projected to hit the area, Saturday's baker play results became final at the Dr. Robert Cincotta Memorial Invitational, leading to the 25th-ranked Kutztown University women's bowling team topping the nine-team field to win the tournament at Hackensack's Bowler City.
The Golden Bears (48-27 overall) claimed four victories on the day, two of which came against challenging, Division I opponents. The team posted three matches with over 1,000 pins, and the other two matches combined for a 5,088 pinfall total, the only team to surpass 5,000 pins on the day and lead by over 100 pins ahead of second-place Dominican (N.Y.).
Kutztown defeated Long Island, 1016-923, in the opener before falling to host Molloy, 1005-945, in a high-scoring second match. The final three contests all went the way of the Maroon and Gold, as an 1103-876 boosted the team's pinfall total in the win over Caldwell, while motivating KU to claim wins over St. Thomas Aquinas (965-631) and Fairleigh Dickinson (1059-871) on its way to victory.
Reigning East Coast Conference Coach of the Year
Angela Reynolds put the five matches into the hands of
Sydney Snyder (Morrisville, Pa./Conwell-Egan Catholic),
Brooke Heimbach (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown),
Isabella Hopper (Mifflinville, Pa./Berwick),
Kamryn Brenneman (York, Pa./Central York) and
Madilyn Bogovic (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cedar Cliff). The quintet of keglers tallied a pair of 225+ pin games in the LIU match, while they posted four 200+ pin games in the 1,103 output against Caldwell, rolling a game two 256 and a game five 258 to lead their day.
Trailing KU and Dominican (N.Y.) in the tournament's final standings were Adelphi, Molloy and Caldwell in the top five. Kutztown was the lone team to win four games, while it was one of three squads to lose just once – Dominican (3-1) and Adelphi (3-1) both had bye rounds and could not obtain a 4-1 record on the day.
The top spot on the weekend marks Kutztown's second official and third unofficial tournament win of the season. The Maroon and Gold claimed the top spot at its home Golden Bear Invite back in November, while the tournament preceding that, the Bud Whitman Memorial, remained ongoing following KU's departure due to weather concerns following a 5-0 first day.
The Golden Bears cap off its regular season in Delaware with the two-day Northeast Roundup, hosted by Wilmington (Del.) University, on Saturday, March 14, and Sunday, March 15, at the New Castle Bowlerama.
