MERTZTOWN, Pa. – Kutztown women's volleyball had to complete two late rallies in the final two sets to complete a straight set sweep over Millersville Saturday night in a competitive, PSAC East match that went into extra points twice, at Brandywine Heights Area High School.
Â
The Golden Bears (17-4 overall, 5-2 PSAC East) won by scores of 25-14, 31-29, 26-24. They once again responded well to adversity after falling in straight sets at Shepherd Friday night. KU has done a good job of not letting one defeat spiral into more as all four of its losses this season were followed by a victory.
Â
Kutztown is competing for a postseason berth and Saturday's match had a postseason feel. After taking care of business rather handily in the opening set, the Marauders (5-13, 0-8) didn't back down and showed fight, even for a team without a conference win yet this season. In each of the final two sets, the visitors held leads late, but the Maroon and Gold rallied both times. MU fought back from down 23-20 to take a 25-24 advantage in the second set, just needing one point to win, but the teams traded punches for the next 11 rallies until KU came out on top 31-29. In set three, Millersville was ahead 21-20 before the Golden Bears tied up the score at 24-24, and then ended the night on a kill by
Madilyn Bogovic (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cedar Cliff) and an attacking error by the Marauders.
Â
Bogovic paced the offense with 17 kills and added nine digs.
Paige Skinner (Placerville, Calif./Ponderosa) finished with 16 kills and nine digs with three service aces.
Grace White (Pennsburg, Pa./Quakertown) tallied six kills and three blocks.
Ellie White (Pennsburg, Pa./Quakertown) recorded seven kills, three blocks and two blocks.
Jaedyn Bartholomew (Schuylkill Haven, Pa./Blue Mountain) notched three kills.
Emma Baldridge (Damascus, Md./Damascus) dished out 25 assists and had seven digs, while
Abby Polo (Coventry, Conn./Coventry) contributed 18 assists.
Saige Thibodeaux (Cape Coral, Fla./Ida S. Baker) led the defense with 19 digs and added three assists.
Â
Kutztown has a quick turnaround and will next be on the court on Tuesday, Oct. 13, at Shippensburg, at 7 p.m., in a PSAC East match.
