NEW CASTLE, Del. – The 23rd-ranked Kutztown University bowling team was given a tough hand featuring four ranked opponents on Saturday, picking up a win over the Wilmington Wildcats on the second day of the Northeast Classic, hosted by Sacred Heart University, at the Bowlerama bowling alley in New Castle, Del.
The Golden Bears (24-11 overall) picked up its lone victory of the day in the second match against the Wildcats, an 848-789 victory. It was preceded by a high-scoring, 1108-1014 loss at the hands of No. 10 Maryville, and losses to No. 12 Wright State (976-838), No. 19 McKendree (860-790) and No. 6 Wichita State (1081-918) followed.
Kutztown's highest scoring output against the Saints in the opening match saw three bowlers roll 200-pin games, headlined by a 238 from freshman
Madilyn Bogovic (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cedar Cliff). Another 238 from
Shelby Wunch (Easton, Md./Easton) led the team in its second match of the day, as the senior kegler turned in three total games above 200 pins.
In the individual standings, Bogovic's 200.8 pin average places her in 39th out of 229 total bowlers and highest among all KU bowlers. Wunch (50th),
Miranda Pielhau (Waretown, N.J./Southern Regional) (92nd) and
Sydney Snyder (Morrisville, Pa./Conwell-Egan Catholic) (98th) round out the top 100 from Kutztown's squad.
After two days of competition, the Golden Bears sit 22nd out of 36 teams at the tournament, thanks to its 9,145 total pinfall across the first two days of competition.
The Golden Bears will return to the Northeast Classic on Sunday morning, opening best-of-seven baker play against East Coast Conference foe and No. 20 Bryant around 8:25 a.m. The three matches played on Sunday will determine the final standings of the weekend's competition.
