READING, Pa. – Andrew Szeplaki (Bath, Pa./Northampton) needed just two meets to introduce himself to collegiate pole vaulting's elites. The Kutztown University freshman set new program and Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference indoor records with a top vault of 5.30 meters (17-4.5), highlighting the Golden Bear men's indoor track & field team's efforts at Saturday's Alvernia Winter Invitational.
Â
Szeplaki was in a league of his own on Saturday, with his record-setting mark nearly three full feet better than that of runner-up Jake Jones from West Chester. The Bath, Pa., native and Northampton Area High School graduate broke the PSAC record of 17-2.25 previously set by Drew Layton of Slippery Rock in 2025, and Joe Jardine's school record of 5.14m (16-10.25) from the 2024 NCAA DII Indoor Championships.
Â
Szeplaki's mark is currently the best in NCAA DII, ahead of Harding's Vlad Malykhin (5.26m/17-3).
Â
Kutztown enjoyed a strong 2026 debut with Szeplaki leading the way. The Golden Bears recorded two event wins, six PSAC Championship cuts and four program top 10 performances.
Â
Robby Lloyd (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) and
Peyton Small (Littlestown, Pa./Littlestown) paced four KU runners in the top 10 of the 5k, each finishing with PSAC qualifying and program top 10 times. Lloyd was fourth in 15:19.69 to move into sixth on KU's top 10, while Small's 15:23.91 was good for 10th all-time.
Â
Freshman
Jaydon Witman (Hamburg, Pa./Hamburg) set the seventh-fastest 60m hurdles time in program history with an 8.41 in preliminary heats to earn the second seed in the final. He ran 8.53 in the final to place third.
Â
Sean Singleton (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) bested 69 other sprinters to set fast time in the 200m with a 22.61. Fellow Golden Bear
Kymanni Johnson (Baltimore, Md./Overlea) was third in 22.64.
Â
Johnson collected a pair of top three finishes, backing up his 200m performance with an even better runner-up showing in the 60m. Johnson clocked a 6.97, best of 85 competitors, in prelims before going 6.93 in the finals to take second.
Daron Haggans (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) was third (6.96) and Singleton sixth (7.03).
Â
Jake Kelly (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) earned PSAC qualifying marks in both throwing events. The sophomore finished third in the shot put and fourth in the weigh throw while throwing the exact same distance in each event (15.59m/51-1.75).
Â
Kutztown got additional top three finishes from its 4x400m relay team of
Joe Cavalcante (Philadelphia, Pa./La Salle College H.S.),
Owen Weaver (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker),
David Bates (Mertztown, Pa./Brandywine Heights) and
James Washburn (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) (3:31.19) and freshman vaulter
Henry Cifaloglio (Vineland, N.J./Delsea Regional) (4.15m/13-7.25).
Â
The Golden Bears are scheduled to compete each of the next seven weeks, culminating with the PSAC Indoor Championships on Feb. 28-March 1, at Lehigh University. Next up for KU is a trip to Bucknell for the Gulden Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 24.
