Golden Bears drop damp conference battle to West Chester

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's soccer team fell in a rainy battle between two Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Division contenders, as the West Chester Golden Rams took the 1-0 victory at Rockwell Field on Wednesday afternoon.

The Golden Bears (5-2, 3-2 PSAC East) weathered a strong offensive attack from the Golden Rams (3-1-2, 1-1-2 PSAC East), but a second-half strike from WCU's Kianna Barber gave the home team its first conference victory of the season.

West Chester's attack featured 25 shots, with 14 coming on frame, but KU keeper Morgan O'Donnell (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) put up a career best 13 saves to keep the Bears in a good position. One of the top keepers in the conference was able to hold her own for the first half, but a well-placed ball in the top corner of the goal was her lone blemish on the afternoon.

Kutztown made a late charge in the final ten minutes, with a pair of shots coming from the KU attack, but the strong West Chester defense was able to lock down the box and protect its one-goal victory.

Kutztown took five shots on the afternoon, with the lone attempt on frame coming from midfielder Maura Day (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Abington) in the 85th minute. WCU held the advantage in corners (4-1), while KU held the advantage in saved shots (13-1).

The Golden Bears will have the weekend off before traveling to Shippensburg to face the Raiders on Wednesday, Oct. 1, with kickoff set for 4 p.m.
