Dr. Charles F. Roth '68 to be honored with 2025 KU Athletics Legacy Award

KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- Longtime professor and supporter of Kutztown University, Dr. Charles F. Roth '68, was announced as the 2025 recipient of the KU Athletics Legacy Award on Thursday morning. Roth will receive the award during the university's annual Athletics Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony Friday, Nov. 14.

Roth played football under the former Kutztown State College banner from 1964-67, leading to his graduation in 1968 with a degree in secondary education. A staunch supporter of the university for more than five decades, Roth's philanthropy actually began as a student when he made his first donation to the Golden Bear football program during his sophomore year of college.

Roth went on to earn a Master of Education in educational technology from West Chester University and a Ph.D. in instructional technology from Southern Illinois University Carbondale. He also served with the Air Force Special Operations Group and on loan to the Army.

Roth's love for Kutztown carried him into a teaching role in communications and instructional technology from 1989-2011.

Roth led the Alumni Football Association and went on to create three endowed scholarships, supporting student-athletes along with elementary education students at KU. He also served as a leader in the creation of the Golden Bear Athletic Club and Football Legacy Club. In addition, he has been a long-standing member of the Heilman Herd, an alumni group formed in the early 2000s consisting of former players of late head coach Bud Heilman. The Herd met monthly in support of KU football and reminisced about their time in the Maroon and Gold.

With KU and football never far from his mind, Roth recently created his fourth scholarship, the Dr. Charles F. Roth '68 Golden Bear Football Endowed Scholarship, and secured a locker in his name for the new KU football locker room.

A Lehigh Valley resident, Roth long enjoyed a passion for photography, chasing storms and capturing nature and natural phenomena. His two sons, Byron and Jarrett, also have KU degrees, with daughter Kimberly graduating from Shippensburg University.

Roth's passion and love for Golden Bear football can be seen every game day at Andre Reed Stadium, where he attends every home football game on campus.

The 2025 Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will take place Friday, Nov. 14, in the Nancy Jean Stump Seiger '54 Room, 218 McFarland Student Union.

Tickets for the event can be purchased HERE. Adult tickets are $45 and children (3-12) are $15. The evening begins with a reception at 5 p.m., followed by dinner at 6 p.m., and the KU Athletics Legacy Award presentation and induction ceremony at 7 p.m.
