Kutztown suffers first PSAC East defeat against Millersville

KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- The Kutztown University women's tennis team fell for the first time in three PSAC East matches this season as Millersville won five times in singles play to take a 5-2 victory from the Keystone Courts Monday afternoon.

The Golden Bears took early advantage of a shorthanded Marauder squad that had just five players available. A default victory at third doubles set KU up to take the point and they did just that when Bieke Roovers (Leiden, Netherlands/Leonardo College) and Isabela de Nadai (Vitoria, Brazil/St. Paul's School) topped Hui Jen Soo and Lauren Hayes, 6-4, at No. 1.

Kutztown (4-8, 2-1 PSAC East) bumped its lead to 2-0 on another default victory at No. 6 singles but Millersville (8-7, 3-1 PSAC East) won the remaining five matches, including three that went to three sets.

The host Bears needed two points to secure the match win but came out on the wrong end of three-set matches at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 4 singles.

Semery overcame a first set loss to force a third at No. 1 but could not get past Soo in a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 loss. Millersville's Chloe Abramowitz rallied from a set down to beat de Nadai 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 to clinch the match for the visitors. At No. 4, Ximena Bolanos (Mineral de la Reforma, Mexico/Colegio Makarenko) traded 6-4 sets with Luci Consigliere before Consigliere pulled away in the third for a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 victory.

Kutztown will play its third conference match in as many days when it heads north to Bloomsburg for a 3 p.m. start on Tuesday.
