KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University baseball team couldn't find their offensive rhythm on Monday afternoon, losing two games to the Bloomsburg Huskies, 3-0 and 6-3, at North Campus Baseball Field in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Division series that concludes tomorrow at Bloomsburg.
Â
The Golden Bears (11-22, 4-10 PSAC East) seemed to hold tough with their pitching staff, surrendering just six earned runs across the two games. Unfortunately for the home team, the Huskies (14-19, 4-10 PSAC East) controlled the opening games of the series as they look ahead to claim the series on their home turf.
Â
Game 1: Bloomsburg 3, Kutztown 0
Â
The two-hour affair was dominated by Huskies starter Daniel Koppisch (W, 2-4), who looked much better than his season record implied. The righty hurled five scoreless innings while striking out six, giving his team the opportunity to win the game with the three runs they posted in the first, second and fifth innings.
Â
Kutztown couldn't time up their offense in the opening game, as catcher
Michael Burns (Levittown, Pa./Harry S. Truman) had two of the team's four hits while the team drew four walks at different times in the game. Sophomore
Bo Barthol (Breinigsville, Pa./Parkland) was left on base three times, and while the Golden Bears had their opportunities, opposing pitching was able to tame the bats and claim the game.
Â
Abel Saft (Kintnersville, Pa./Moravian Academy) (L, 0-6) picked up the loss after allowing two runs (one earned) and walking five through a pair of innings.
Tyler Cleveland (Pillow, Pa./Upper Dauphin) pitched five solid innings for KU, striking out two and allowing just one run. Bloomsburg's Pete Modrovsky (SV, 1) came in to close out the last two innings of the win.
Â
Game 2: Bloomsburg 6, Kutztown 3
In what looked to be a much closer game, the Golden Bears couldn't catch a break. Kutztown's
Jimmy Kerley (Indian Trail, N.C./Sun Valley) sent home the game's opening run in the first to drum up some momentum, but Bloomsburg bounced back with a two-run homer in the second that raised some eyebrows as it hugged the foul pole in left field. Kutztown managed to tie things up in the third thanks to a
Bryce Schafer (Kempton, Pa./Kutztown) single, but a defensive misstep allowed Bloomsburg to claim a two-run lead to take back momentum for the rest of the game.
Â
The Golden Bears were much more offensively present in the latter game, as Burns, Kerley and shortstop
Nick Varda (Columbia, Md./Atholton)Â each had a pair of hits on the day. Barthol scored a pair of runs while hitting a double and stealing a base, but in the end, it was Bloomsburg's Brandon Wozniak (W, 2-1) who tamed the Bears and came away with the win after 5.1 innings.
Â
Despite the strong six innings of work battling the Huskies, righty
Cody Barberio (Green Lane, Pa./Quakertown) (L, 2-3) picked up the loss while
Eddie Frye (Lorton, Va./South County) worked the final inning of the game. BU's Matthew Marsten (SV, 2) sealed up the final five outs in 31 pitches.
Â
The Golden Bears and Huskies travel to Bloomsburg to finish the final two games of the four-game set tomorrow at Danny Litwhiler Field, where the first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
