MANSFIELD, Pa. – Four days after its last set of games, two defeats at nationally ranked East Stroudsburg, and two days after the originally scheduled date of its next set of games, No. 16 Kutztown was able to take the field again and take out its frustrations as it swept both games of a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division doubleheader Sunday at Mansfield.
Â
The Golden Bears (29-10 overall, 13-7 PSAC), who won game one 6-1 and game two 11-7, were originally scheduled to play the Mountaineers (6-22, 4-16) on Friday, but rain moved the games to Sunday. The teams also swapped their home-and-homes because of field conditions, as KU hosted MU back on March 21, and took both games as well.
Â
Brianna Stocklin (Deptford, N.J./Deptford Township) and
Sarah Harvat (Bangor, Pa./Bangor) both finished with four hits on the day, two in each game. Stocklin scored three runs and had an RBI, including hitting her first home run of the season, while Harvat added two RBIs and scored two runs.
Emily Henn (Matamoras, Pa./Delaware Valley) and
Alexa Stevens (Covington Township, Pa./North Pocono) each recorded three hits with Stevens contributing three RBIs and two runs scored and Henn adding an RBI.
Jenna Piatkiewicz (Fogelsville, Pa./Parkland) and
Samantha Paetow (Fayetteville, Pa./Chambersburg) both tallied two hits and combined for seven RBIs. Both of Piatkiewicz's hits were long balls of the two-run fashion in game two, and she did it in back-to-back innings. Paetow also had a HR, in game one.
Â
Kutztown outhit Mansfield 21-16 on the day.
Â
Haley Gravish (Hamburg, Pa./Hamburg) started game one inside the circle and threw a complete game, striking out seven and allowing just one run to win her 17th game this season.
Amanda Slabicki (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) came on in relief in game two and earned the victory to remain perfect on the year at 5-0.
Â
After three scoreless innings in the opener, Harvat brought in the game's first run on a single in the top of the fourth and then Stevens followed suit with an RBI single in the fifth for a 2-0 advantage. The Mounties got one back with a run in the bottom-half of the fifth before KU put the game away with a four-run top of the seventh, highlighted by a solo HR by Stocklin and three-run shot from Paetow.
Â
In game two, the Golden Bears actually trailed after Mansfield scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Piatkiewicz and Stevens answered with two 3-run home runs in the third for a 4-2 lead. But Mansfield tied the score back up with a two-run home run in the bottom-half of the frame.
Â
It was a back-and-forth game throughout much of it as Piatkiewicz put her team back out in front with another two-run long ball in the fourth, just before the Mounties responded with two more runs.
Â
Morgan Slomkowski (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) ripped an RBI double in the top of the fifth to give Kutztown the lead back for good and then Harvat and Henn added RBIs each.
Â
Kutztown is set to host West Chester, a team it split with in the last meeting, this Tuesday, April 15, with game one from North Campus Field starting at 1 p.m.
