Archie captures high jump as Golden Bears have successful Sunday at Bison Outdoor Classic

LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Freshman Kyle Archie (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) won the high jump invite and the Kutztown University men's track & field team enjoyed a strong Sunday at the Bucknell Bison Outdoor Classic with three program top 10s and seven PSAC qualifying cuts.

Archie collected his second straight event victory in the high jump after turning in the top mark at last weekend's Millersville Metrics. The Reading, Pa., native took on the meet's top athletes in the event by competing in the invite section and emerged with the eighth-best jump in KU history by clearing 2.03m (6-8). The PSAC qualifying jump tied Archie with Lehigh's Skyler Mott and Bryant's Michael Marshall for the win but Archie claimed the top spot by clearing the height on his first attempt. Mott and Marshall each cleared the bar on their third tries.

Sophomore TJ White (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg), who was a high school teammate of Archie's at nearby Muhlenberg, also achieved another PSAC cut by clearing 1.98m (6-6) to tie for sixth in the high jump invite .

Five of Kutztown's seven PSAC cuts came in field events.

Jacob Solonoski (Weatherly, Pa./Weatherly) registered a personal best in the hammer throw with a heave of 53.90m (176-10) to take 13th out of 45 competitors. Solonoski remained fifth on KU's top 10 list. Anthony Helmstetter (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) was 15th in the javelin (54.57m/179-0) and Trey Hamlin III (Townsend, Del./Caravel Academy) finished 16th of 46 in the triple jump with a best jump of 13.72m (45-0.25).

The Golden Bears' 4x100m relay team of Michael Fellin (Sheppton, Pa./Marian Catholic), James Washburn (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River), Steele Wrigley (Coatesville, Pa./Octorara) and Daron Haggans (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) were in top form again. The quartet ran the third-fastest time of 25 teams to place third in 41.34. They set the school record with a 40.68 two weeks ago at the Dr. Jack M. Toms Alumni Invitational at Lynchburg University.

Washburn was the top placing individual on the track with the 11th-best time in the 400m hurdles (54.52) --a PSAC cut time. Haggans achieved a PSAC qualifying time of 10.71 in the 100m to finish 12th of 97 sprinters.

In a non-PSAC Championship event, school record holder Port Habalar (Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport) ran a sub-9:00 3000m to place 23rd (8:58.75), while freshman Willie Wiles (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) joined the program's top 10 in sixth with a 9:01.38, good for 25th overall in the meet.

The Maroon and Gold will travel to a pair of meets next weekend as the regular season rapidly approaches its finish. Kutztown is set to compete in the Paul Donahue Invitational at Widener on Friday and Saturday, and the Coach Pollard Invitational at Moravian on Friday.
