Kutztown topped by Salem in spring opener

KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- After a pair of cancellations earlier in March, the Kutztown University women's tennis team made its long-awaited return to competition Friday afternoon at the Keystone Courts. The Golden Bears fell to ITA Atlantic Region foe Salem (W.Va.) by a 7-0 score in their opening match of the spring.

The visiting Tigers (7-3) picked up wins in all three doubles flights by matching 6-2 scores before going on to claim 5-of-6 singles flights in straight sets.

Isabela de Nadai (Vitoria, Brazil/St. Paul's School) battled hard in her No. 3 singles match against regionally ranked Aishwarya Prasad, sending it to a third set. Prasad, ranked No. 16 in the ITA's lone Atlantic Region rankings released to date, prevailed in the super tiebreaker 6-3, 2-6, 10-6.

At No. 1 singles, Emma Semery (Fuveau, France/HDN Academy) took six games off of Erna Brdarevic in a 6-4, 6-2 setback, while 2024 PSAC East Freshman of the Year Bieke Roovers (Leiden, Netherlands/Leonardo College) won five games in a 6-4, 6-1 defeat at No. 2 against Galia Mezouar.

The Golden Bears (2-4) are gearing up for a heavy April schedule that includes 11 matches in 23 days, beginning with Tuesday's non-conference road contest at Goldey-Beacom. KU opens PSAC East play at home against Shippensburg next Wednesday, April 2, at 3 p.m.
