BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Kutztown University men's track & field used medal-winning efforts from its distance medley relay team along with long jumpers
Gabe Sample (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) and
Trey Hamlin III (Townsend, Del./Caravel Academy) to climb to third place in the team standings following Saturday's events at the 2025 PSAC Indoor Championships.
It's been an impressive winter for the Golden Bear men's program on the indoor circuit and they were ready for postseason competition. Kutztown featured seven point scorers (six individuals, one relay), set three NCAA provisional qualifying marks, registered seven program top 10s --including a school record-- and advanced five sprinters to Sunday's finals.
Kutztown saw both its men's and women's distance medley relay teams claim silver medals.
Port Habalar (Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport),
Joe Cavalcante (Philadelphia, Pa./La Salle College H.S.),
Joey Pittman (Stafford, Va./Stafford) and
Adam Brocato (Reisterstown, Md./Calvert Hall) combined to run the third-fastest time in program history with a 10:15.69 to collect All-PSAC Second Team honors. Cavalcante, Habalar and Brocato are now part of two of the top five DMR teams in school history after being part of last year's fourth-best (now fifth) relay that turned in a 10:18.22 at the PSAC meet.
Junior
Gabe Sample (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) snagged a medal in the long jump for the second year in a row. The Reading, Pa., native tied his PR with a best jump of 7.25m (23-9.50) to reach the NCAA provisional cut and earn the silver. Sample ranks second all-time in the event at KU and moved one step up the podium after winning bronze in 2024.
Freshman
Trey Hamlin III (Townsend, Del./Caravel Academy) secured this year's bronze in the long jump to give KU two of the top three finishers in the event. Hamlin III set a new PR with a top effort of 7.18m (23-6.75) and achieved a NCAA provisional mark. In doing so, he moved from fifth to fourth on KU's all-time top 10.
Nate Schaeffer (Mohrsville, Pa./Schuylkill Valley) finished fourth in the pole vault and
Jacob Solonoski (Weatherly, Pa./Weatherly) was fourth in the weight throw to round out Kutztown's top five placewinners on Saturday. Schaeffer cleared 4.50m (14-9) and was one of two point-scorers in the pole vault along with sixth-place
Caleb Tryninewski (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) (4.35m/14-3.25). Solonoski edged his former career-best with a throw of 17.45m (57-3) to remain fifth on the program top 10 list.
Back on the track,
Robby Lloyd (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) ran 15:37.25 in the 5000m to finish eighth and earn KU a point in the team standings.
Michael Fellin's (Sheppton, Pa./Marian Catholic) pursuit of "fastest man in the PSAC" got off to a good start with the top qualifying time of 6.73m in the 60m. Fellin tied his own school record and set a NCAA provisional cut time in the process.
Daron Haggans (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) elevated to a tie for third in school history with a new PR of 6.92 to set the sixth-best prelims time and qualify for the finals.
Haggans also jumped up to sixth from eighth in the 200m after registering the second-fastest prelims time (22.07). Kutztown added two more finals qualifiers with
Kyle Love (Lansdowne, Pa./Bonner-Prendergast) in the 60m hurdles and
James Washburn (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) in the 400m. Love went third in prelims (8.28), while Washburn was eighth (50.20).
Owen Weaver (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) represented the Golden Bears in the heptathlon and is in contention for a top five finish after 4-of-7 events. Weaver collected 2,650 points on day one. His top point performance came in the 60m where he ran 7.22 for 806 pts. His best finish relative to his competitors was a fourth place showing in the long jump (6.71m/22-0.25). He'll take part in the 60m hurdles, pole vault and 1000m on Sunday to finish the event.
Shippensburg paces the men's team standings with 48 points, with Slippery Rock second (40) and the Golden Bears third (35). East Stroudsburg is fourth (33) and Lock Haven a distant fifth (16).
Along with the conclusion of the heptathlon, events slated for Sunday include the high jump, shot put, mile, 60m hurdles final, 400m final, triple jump, 60m final, 800m, 200m final, 3000m and 4x400m relay. Competition is set to begin at 11:30 a.m., from Lehigh University's Rauch Fieldhouse.
