Kutztown tops ranked opponent to conclude Mount Shootout

MOUNT JOY, Pa. – The Kutztown University bowling team wrapped up their three-day tournament with a 1-2 record in best-of-seven baker competition on Sunday, finishing the 7th Annual Mount Shootout in seventh place at Clearview Lanes.

The Golden Bears (40-32 overall) bowled in three matches that went the distance, each ending in a 4-3 score. Kutztown dropped their first two matches to No. 21 Delaware State and Emmanuel, but rebounded to finish the event with a win over No. 24 Mercyhurst.

The Maroon and Gold held momentum after winning games five and six to make the score three-all, but the Hornets were able to roll a 233 game to move up in the bracket. It was a similar story in the second match, as KU held a 3-2 advantage before dropping game six and missing out on a win by 10 pins in the final game to Emmanuel.

Kutztown held their own against Mercyhurst, building a 2-0 advantage and rolling a pair of 200 games to pick up their third and fourth wins to defeat their former East Coast Conference foe. The Golden Bears rolled their top two games in games two (256 pins) and four (246 pins) to defeat the Lakers.

KU wrapped up the three-day tournament with a 6-6 mark, posting three ranked wins on the weekend, one of which was the lone loss of the weekend for tournament champion and 21st ranked FDU. The Golden Bears continued to receive votes in the February edition of the National Tenpin Coaches Association Top 25 Poll while slotting in as the 6th best team in the Division II/III Poll.

Kutztown will compete at the three-day Wildcat DII Invitational next weekend, starting Friday, Feb. 14, at Bowlerama in New Castle, Del.
