MOUNT JOY, Pa. – The Kutztown University bowling team went through a gauntlet on Saturday in their traditional competition, rolling a win and splitting a pair of matches against East Coast Conference opponents to place fifth on the second day of the 7th Annual Mount Shootout at Clearview Lanes.
The Golden Bears (39-30 overall) claimed their lone win of the day over conference foe Bryant, rolling an 1,110 match in their highest-scoring output of the day. They added 5,074 pins to their weekend total, giving them 10,204 pins over nine matches and a bye.
Kutztown opened the day with a 1,012-pin performance in its bye slot, followed by a 1,048 against No. 16 Mount St. Mary's, 925 pins against Saint Anselm and 979 pins against No. 12 Sacred Heart to close out the second of three days.
The tandem of rookie Kamryn Brenneman (York, Pa./Central York) and senior Chloe Sromovski (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./G.A.R. Memorial) led the way for the Maroon and Gold, as the former turned in four marks of 200-plus pins while the veteran bowler rolled two of the teams highest game totals with a 238 against Mount St. Mary's and a 239 in the win over Bryant. Madison Brenneman (York, Pa./Central York), Shelby Wunch (Easton, Md./Easton) and Megan Hanaway (Forked River, N.J./Lacey Township) filled the other three spots, with Sydney Snyder (Morrisville, Pa./Conwell-Egan Catholic) coming in for relief towards the end of the day.
Individual standings were tracked in today's traditional play, as the younger Brenneman sister led the team, placing 11th among 80 bowlers. Her 230-pin day-high score against Saint Anselm boosted her mark to a 1,088-pin total and 217.6-pin average. Sromovski's 209.6 pinfall average and 1,048 total pinfall placed her 16th, while Wunch scored just over 1,000 pins (1,008) on the day to finish 26th.
The Golden Bears were left out of the championship track, as No. 22 FDU, No. 16 Mount St. Mary's, No. 12 Sacred Heart and Niagara earned the top four spots and will try to run the table to claim the tournament's crown. Kutztown will start the afternoon against No. 21 Delaware State, who finished sixth after the first two days. KU opened the tournament with an 81-point win over the Hornets on Friday.
The Delaware State match is the first of three best-of-seven baker contests that will take place tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 9, at Clearview Lanes at 9 a.m.
