YORK, Pa. – Ana Soto (Hamburg, N.J./Vernon Township) broke Kutztown University's 29-year-old 50-yard freestyle record, Wednesday, when she registered a 24.19 in a time trial at the PSAC Championships. The Golden Bears sent four swimmers to finals and recorded three program top 10 times in addition to Soto's school record.
Soto, a junior from Hamburg, N.J., already sat third on the program's top 10 list with a 24.32 at last year's PSAC Championships. Following the morning qualifying heats, she took to the pool for a 50 free time trial with four other competitors. Soto took .15 off her previous personal best and surpassed Elizabeth Thoryk's record of 24.25 set back in 1996.
Thoryk's 50 free time had been the longest-standing school record. That now belongs to the 200 free relay team from 1997 (1:37.19), which she was a member of along with Claudine Gruve, Rachelle Ziegler and Jen Sullivan.
Kutztown put a swimmer through to finals in all four individual events during the morning session.
Annamarie Rodier (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) qualified for the C Final in the 500 free,
Phoebe Armes (Somerset, UK/Millfield School) and
Tatum Rothermel (Halifax, Pa./Halifax) grabbed the last C Final spots in the 100 backstroke and 100 breaststroke, and
Sarah Zeminski (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) claimed a B Final spot in the 200 butterfly.
Zeminski would be the top finishing individual with a 16th-place performance in the 200 fly C Final with a time of 2:15.28. Rodier won the C Final to take 17th overall in the 500 free (5:10.96).
Armes claimed 24th in the 100 back by setting the eighth-fastest time in school history with a 1:00.97. Her prelims time of 1:01.03 had moved her up from 10th to eighth earlier in the day. Rothermel set a new PR of 1:08.52 in the 100 breast prelims to remain eighth all-time at KU and went 24th overall with a 1:08.94 in the C Final.
Armes, Rothermel, Damico and Pease-Wingenter brought home Kutztown's second top eight relay finish of the meet in the 200 medley relay. Their time of 1:49.27 ranks fifth in program history.
The Golden Bears continue to possess 10th place in the team standings, now with 253 points.
Thursday marks the final day of competition at the PSAC Championships. KU will be represented in the 1,650 free, 100 free, 200 back and 200 breast, along with the 400 free relay.
