No. 2 seed Golden Bears draw Assumption in NCAA Division II Championship opener

INDIANAPOLIS -- Kutztown University was one of eight teams to hear its name called during Sunday night's 2025 NCAA Division II Field Hockey Championship Selection Show. The Golden Bears earned the No. 2 seed in the upcoming tournament and will face No. 7 seed Assumption in a first round game at Andre Reed Stadium next Saturday, Nov. 15, at 6 p.m.

Kutztown will be making its eighth appearance in the DII national tournament all-time and is in the field for the third consecutive year. The Golden Bears have appeared in each of the last two national championship games, winning the program's first-ever title in 2023 and finishing as runners-up in 2024.

Head coach Marci Scheuing guided the Maroon and Gold to a program-record 19 consecutive victories and 19 straight victories to open the 2025 season before KU was defeated by No. 2 Shippensburg, 2-1, in the PSAC Championship Game on Sunday. Kutztown's 19 victories are tied for the most in a season in school history with the 2023 national championship team, which finished 19-3.

KU will be hosting a first round game for the third straight season. The Golden Bears are 3-0 in NCAA first round games under Scheuing, defeating Southern New Hampshire in 2019 and 2024, and Pace in 2023.

The Golden Bears will be matched up against another Northeast 10 program in the first round this year as Assumption visits Andre Reed Stadium. The Greyhounds are 13-6 overall and reached the NE10 semifinals before falling to Bentley, 3-1, Nov. 7.

Kutztown is 7-1 all-time against Assumption dating back to 1998, but the teams haven't squared off since 2016. This will be the first postseason meeting between the two schools.

Kutztown previously qualified for the NCAA DII Tournament in 1982, 1983, 1997, 2007, 2019, 2023 and 2024. They also advanced to the NCAA DIII Tournament in 1988 during an eight-year stretch when they were classified as DIII in field hockey between 1984-91.

The PSAC claimed four of the eight spots in the field. No. 3 seed Shippensburg will face defending national champion and NE10 champion No. 6 Saint Anselm in the first round, while No. 4 East Stroudsburg hosts No. 5 West Chester in an all-PSAC matchup. The only game without PSAC representation features top seed and unbeaten Newberry, the South Atlantic Conference champion, taking on NE10 runner-up No. 8 Bentley.

Newberry (SAC) and Shippensburg (PSAC) earned automatic qualifying berths from the Atlantic Region by virtue of their conference titles, while Kutztown, East Stroudsburg and West Chester were at-large selections. Saint Anselm (NE10) was the lone automatic qualifier from the East Region, with conference foes Assumption and Bentley securing the at-large berths.

The four winners from next Saturday's first round games will advance to the semifinals at Bloomsburg University's Steph Pettit Stadium on Friday, Nov. 21. The national championship game will take place in Bloomsburg, Pa., on Sunday, Nov. 23, at 12:30 p.m.
