KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Top ranked Kutztown field hockey closed out its regular-season home schedule with a 3-0 victory over Frostburg State on Saturday afternoon.
Prior to the contest, the Golden Bears (16-1, 7-1 PSAC) recognized four seniors in a Senior Day ceremony: Paige Bucher (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest), Jordan Stroup (Millerstown, Pa./Greenwood), Jessica Traynor (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) and Rachel Galasso (Sweet Valley, Pa./Lake Lehman). All four were in the starting lineup for the matchup.
Kutztown wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, as junior Marissa Rice (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) redirected a shot from Galasso into the back of the cage just 2:55 into the contest to give the Maroon and Gold an early 1-0 lead.
Following the opening goal, the pace settled as both teams battled for possession through the midfield and looked to generate offensive opportunities. Junior goalkeeper Lorelai Lehenky (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) turned aside all seven Frostburg (6-10, 1-6 PSAC) shots on goal to preserve the shutout. At the other end, KU generated 24 shots and earned a commanding 14-3 advantage in penalty corners, while the Bobcats' goalkeeper recorded 12 saves.
The Golden Bears extended their lead at 44:30 when junior Ellie Myers (Denver, Pa./Cocalico) finished a feed from freshman Anna Harris (Reston, Va./South Lakes) to make it a 2-0 contest. Sophomore Bree Zoccolo (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) capped the scoring at 56:25, capitalizing on a breakaway opportunity after receiving a pass from Jade Traynor (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) and finishing in a one-on-one opportunity against the Frostburg goalkeeper to secure the 3-0 victory.
Kutztown closes out its regular season on the road Friday, Nov. 6, traveling to Bloomsburg for a 1 p.m. matchup.
