No. 1 Kutztown tops No. 2 Shippensburg to cap perfect regular season

Box Score

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The No. 1-ranked Kutztown University field hockey team proved once again why it's the top team in the nation, defeating No. 2-ranked Shippensburg University 2-0 Saturday night at Andre Reed Stadium to close out a perfect 18-0 regular season.

The victory marked the Golden Bears' (18-0, 9-0 PSAC) first-ever perfect PSAC campaign and just their second undefeated regular season in program history, joining the 1971 team (5 wins, 3 ties). Under head coach Marci Scheuing, Kutztown continues to reach new heights, extending its program-record start and win streak while tying the second-most wins in a single season (18).

The top-two national matchup was a rematch of last year's NCAA semifinal, when KU edged Shippensburg 4-3 to advance to the national championship. This time, the Golden Bears controlled play from start to finish, securing their tenth shutout of the season—third-most all-time—in another statement win.

Kutztown wasted no time striking first. Just 6:55 into the opening quarter, freshman Julia Traynor (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) stole the ball right off a Shippensburg defender's stick and fired a quick shot past the keeper for her seventh goal of the season.

The Bears held the 1-0 lead deep into the fourth quarter before sealing the win in the final minutes. With 2:14 remaining, Jessica Traynor (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) redirected a lifted ball from Ellie Myers (Denver, Pa./Cocalico) off a penalty corner to make it 2-0—her 10th goal of the year and the team's 95th of the season. The score extended KU's single-season program records for both goals and assists (64), as the Bears finished with four shots and five penalty corners on the night.

Defensively, Kutztown was outstanding once again. Shippensburg (14-3, 6-3 PSAC) managed just six total shots and four penalty corners—two of which came in the final two minutes as the Raiders tried to claw their way back from the 2-0 deficit. During that late surge, reigning PSAC and NFHCA Defensive Player of the Week Olivia Kirkpatrick (Annville, Pa./Palmyra) came up clutch with her first defensive save of the season, preserving the shutout in the final moments of the top-two matchup.

Freshman goalkeeper Tess Adolf (Lawrence, N.J./Lawrence) stood tall once again, making two critical saves en route to her ninth individual shutout of the year—the second-most in a single season by a goalkeeper in program history.

With the regular season now complete, Kutztown turns its attention to the postseason. The top-seeded Golden Bears will host a PSAC semifinal matchup on Friday, Nov. 7, at 3 p.m. at Andre Reed Stadium. KU will face the winner of Tuesday's quarterfinal between No. 4 seed West Chester and No. 5 seed IUP, scheduled for Nov. 4 at 4 p.m.
