KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The No. 2-ranked Kutztown University field hockey team made history Saturday night, defeating No. 6 Bloomsburg 2-0 at Andre Reed Stadium to record its 11th straight victory, setting new program marks for both the best start to a season and the longest winning streak.
Both records were previously set in 2007, when KU started 10-0 before falling to Bloomsburg in game 11. This time, the Golden Bears (11-0, 3-0 PSAC) flipped the script, handing the Huskies (10-1, 2-1 PSAC) their first loss of the season in shutout fashion.
The win also marked Kutztown's sixth shutout of the year, already among the top 10 single-season totals in program history, and its fourth victory over a nationally ranked opponent this season.
Both KU goals came on milestone moments.
Erin Gonzalez (East Earl, Pa./Garden Spot) opened the scoring 12:24 into the first quarter, deflecting a pass from
Julia Traynor (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) to record her 10th goal of the season and the 40th of her career, which ranks ninth all-time at KU.
In the fourth quarter,
Marissa Rice (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) doubled the lead on a well-executed penalty corner, finishing a setup from
Olivia Kirkpatrick (Annville, Pa./Palmyra) for her 10th goal of the season. Gonzalez and Rice now rank second and third in the PSAC in goals.
Kutztown controlled the game statistically, outshooting Bloomsburg 17-3 and holding a 9-1 edge in corners. Freshman goalkeeper
Tess Adolf (Lawrence, N.J./Lawrence) and the KU defense were flawless once again, keeping the Huskies off the board for the team's sixth clean sheet of the year.
The Golden Bears will look to extend their historic run next Saturday, Oct. 11, when they travel to IUP for a 3:30 p.m. PSAC matchup.
