Kutztown and East Stroudsburg compete in five set thriller

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – Kutztown and East Stroudsburg women's volleyball put on a show for the crowd at Koehler Fieldhouse as fans got their share of volleyball and then some as KU won the opening two sets before host ESU responded to win the next three to earn a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division victory in five sets Friday night.

Scores of the match were 25-19, 25-22, 12-25, 22-25, 14-16.

Both Madilyn Bogovic (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cedar Cliff) and Paige Skinner (Placerville, Calif./Ponderosa) finished with double-doubles. Bogovic tallied 17 kills and 18 digs and Skinner recorded 17 kills and 15 digs. Grace White (Pennsburg, Pa./Quakertown) notched eight kills and two digs. Lauren Montgomery (Norristown, Pa./Mount Saint Joseph Academy) had five kills. Alex Haskins (State College, Pa./State College) contributed three kills and a team-best three blocks. Emma Baldridge (Damascus, Md./Damascus) facilitated the attack with 44 assists and added 21 digs and three kills. Saige Thibodeaux (Cape Coral, Fla./Ida S. Baker) finished with 27 digs and three assists.

Kutztown came out of the gate rolling as it took the opening set after trailing early and widen its lead later, taking a 19-17 edge and converting six of the final eight points to win the opener. KU fell behind by as many as five (8-3) early on, but rattled off six straight to take its first lead and then never trailed the rest of the way. White recorded three consecutive kills late, and a Warrior attack error ended the set.

The second set was different in that the Maroon and Gold jumped out to an early lead and led 3-1. From that point, there were 13 ties and six lead changes. KU erased a 21-19 hole to the tune of scoring six of the final seven points, capped by a kill from Bogovic.

The third set was all ESU as the Warriors woke up, not wanting to be swept on their home court. Following an opening point kill by Skinner, the junior added another, followed by a kill from Bogovic that saw Kutztown ahead 3-2. East Stroudsburg then rattled off six points in-a-row and took a double-digit lead at 18-8, rolling to the victory.

The Golden Bears let a late lead slip in set four as they found themselves on top 21-16, but the Warriors rallied for eight points in-a-row and completed the come-from-behind win.

Kutztown was unable to hold on to a 10-7 lead after a 5-0 spurt in the fifth set as ESU came all the way back from down two sets to win the match after it scored nine of the final 13 points to take set five.

Kutztown and East Stroudsburg will know each other very well after this weekend as the two teams once again meet on the court Saturday, this time inside Keystone Arena for a 4 p.m. match.
