SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's soccer team was able to get to the defense of its opponent on Wednesday evening, but the Shippensburg Raiders' lone shot on goal found the back of the net to give them a 1-0 win at David See Field in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Division competition.
The Golden Bears (5-3, 4-3 PSAC East) pushed the pace as it would in any conference battle, using a high volume of shots and corners to get in the heads of its opponent. The Raiders (2-3-2, 1-3-2 PSAC East) were up to the defensive challenge, as goalkeeper Kirstin Brown saved nine shots on goal while striker Ashley Hughes landed the team's only attempt on frame to escape the Maroon and Gold.
Kutztown took 18 shots and put ten on frame, with junior striker
Corinne Morgan (Port Republic, N.J./Cedar Creek) taking six shots and putting three on target. The Golden Bears upped their attack by taking ten second-half corner attempts, with five tries resulting in shots and just two on-target shots attempted by KU.

Caroline McDonald (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) and defender
Skyler Jordan (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) took three shots apiece, while midfielders
Maura Day (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Abington) and
Mary Nangle (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks South) shot twice each to no avail.
Shippensburg took seven shots on the day, with the goal representing the lone shot on target. The Golden Bears held the advantage in corner kicks, 10-5, while the Raiders committed five fouls to Kutztown's three.
The Golden Bears will have the opportunity to avenge their loss at home, when they welcome the 25th-ranked Bloomsburg Huskies to Keystone Field on Saturday, Oct. 4. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
