EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – The No. 2 nationally ranked Kutztown University field hockey team scored three unanswered goals to take down No. 4 East Stroudsburg, 3-1, Wednesday afternoon at Whitenight Field for its 10th straight win of the season.
ESU (7-2, 0-2 PSAC) struck first just 13:10 into the game, but it was all Golden Bears (10-0, 2-0 PSAC) from there.
Kutztown responded in the second quarter with a pair of goals.
Rachel Galasso (Sweet Valley, Pa./Lake Lehman) got the Bears on the board off a penalty corner just 4:28 into the frame, notching the second goal of her career. With 1:07 left in the half,
Jade Traynor (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) broke free on a fast break and buried the game-winner, sending KU into halftime with a 2-1 lead.
In the fourth quarter,
Erin Gonzalez (East Earl, Pa./Garden Spot) put the finishing touches on the victory, weaving through defenders and around the goalkeeper to net her ninth of the season and push the lead to 3-1.
East Stroudsburg threatened late, generating six penalty corners and earning a penalty stroke in the final quarter, but freshman goalkeeper
Tess Adolf (Lawrence, N.J./Lawrence) stood tall. She stopped five shots in the fourth and finished with a career high six saves, holding the Warriors scoreless over the final three quarters.
The stat sheet was nearly even, with ESU holding a slight edge in shots (10-9) and penalty corners (8-5), but Kutztown's efficiency proved the difference.
With the win, Kutztown has tied its program record of 10 straight victories to open a season, set in 2007. The victory also marked the 150th career win at KU for head coach Marci Scheuing, who is in her 12th season leading the Golden Bears.
The Bears will look to break the program record on Saturday at 5 p.m. when they host No. 6 Bloomsburg at Andre Reed Stadium in another nationally-ranked PSAC matchup.
