NEW CASTLE, Del. – The Kutztown University bowling team wrapped up their weekend with a win over 23rd-ranked Felician in their third of three best-of-seven baker matches to conclude the Northeast Classic, hosted by Sacred Heart University, at the Bowlerama on Sunday.
After rolling their way to a 4-6 record on the first two days of the tournament, the Golden Bears (28-23 overall) started their day up 2-0 on No. 19 Merrimack, the reigning Northeast Conference champion, but fell in six tightly contested battles in Sunday's opener.
KU rolled three-200 pin games in the second best-of-seven baker battle against Morgan State, including a 253 in game five and a 256 in game six, but a seven-point victory from Morgan State pushed the contest into a tiebreaker, one that fell 118-76 in favor of Morgan State.
The Maroon and Gold got the pins to fall their way in the final battle against No. 23 Felician. After going down 2-1 through three games, the Golden Bears rolled a 232 and a 246 in the next two games, and while game six resulted in a 170, the momentum from the prior victories willed Kutztown to a 4-2 win to put a positive conclusion to the weekend.
Head coach Angela Reynolds opened Sunday with Chloe Sromovski (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./G.A.R. Memorial), Shelby Wunch (Easton, Md./Easton), Brooke Heimbach (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown), Kamryn Brenneman (York, Pa./Central York) and Megan Hanaway (Forked River, N.J./Lacey Township), bringing in junior Sydney Snyder (Morrisville, Pa./Conwell-Egan Catholic) for the latter set of games.
The tournament layout was altered on the third day, with teams such as No. 1 Vanderbilt withdrawing due to inclement weather.
The Golden Bears get a week off before heading to Deptford, N.J., to bowl in the Griffin Baker Classic, a two-day tournament hosted by Chestnut Hill on Saturday, Feb. 1, and Sunday, Feb. 2, at Bowlero Deptford.
