COLCHESTER, Vt. –
Juliana Donato (Cedarville, N.J./Schalick) and
Erin Gonzalez (East Earl, Pa./Garden Spot) both found the back of the cage twice and
Megan Doyle (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) added on to the lead as Kutztown took down host Saint Michael's in game one of the Best Western Windjammer Fall Classic Saturday afternoon in Colchester, Vt.
The Golden Bears (2-0 overall) continued their win streak dating back to last season to five games. They also now have a five-game shutout streak on defense during the 2023 and 2024 regular seasons.
It was the first goals of the year for Donato, Gonzalez and Doyle. KU had a goal in each of the first two quarters to go on top 2-0 at halftime, but took control of the game in the third quarter with three tallies. Gonzalez recorded her first goal on an assist by
Paige Bucher (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) 11:39 into the game. Then, 5:49 into the second quarter, Doyle took a pass from
Greenleigh McGehee (New Tripoli, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) and slotted home her first goal and the teams went into intermission with the Maroon and Gold ahead 2-0.
Donato opened the second half with a back-handed goal and added her second on a penalty stroke 10 minutes later. Gonzalez's second goal of the game was sandwiched in-between Donato's and it came after a pass from
Marlee Fetrow (Birdsboro, Pa./Daniel Boone).
Kutztown did not allow a shot and had 59 total of its own. It also had a 19-0 advantage in penalty corners.
Kutztown will stay out in Colchester, Vt., for one more game tomorrow, Sunday, Sept. 8, when it takes on Southern Connecticut State at 1:30 p.m.
