Golden Bears secure series win in doubleheader split against Lock Haven

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University baseball team (12-20, 6-10 PSAC East) secured its first series win in conference play with a doubleheader split against Lock Haven (7-25, 4-16 PSAC East) on a beautiful afternoon at North Campus Field on Sunday.

In game one, Zach Male (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) went the distance to register his first win of the season as the Golden Bears won 6-5 to secure the series win. Game two wasn't as kind to KU, as the Golden Bears were plagued by six errors in a 17-11 loss. The silver lining in game two came in the form of the KU freshman class, most notably Zack Wertman (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg), who launched his first career collegiate home run.

The Golden Bears travel to Philadelphia to take on Jefferson in non-conference action on Tuesday, April 9 at 3 p.m. KU will match up with Shepherd next weekend in a PSAC East series littered with playoff implications.

Game 1: Kutztown 6, Lock Haven 5
KU plated four runs in the second and added insurance in the third and fifth innings, as Male fended off a late Lock Haven rally to secure the 6-5 victory.

Antonio Rossillo (Warrington, Pa./Archbishop Wood) led the way at the dish with a two hit and two RBI performance. Brennan Rozich (Oxford, Pa./Oxford) also notched two RBI, while Cole Regn (Berlin, N.J./Eastern Regional) had a multi-hit game. Male allowed four earned runs while striking out five en route to his first win of the season. Garrett Starr took the loss for Lock Haven.

The Bald Eagles opened the scoring in the top of the second via an RBI single from Dante Bruno to make it 1-0. KU's four run second began with an RBI double from Dominic Proietto (Norristown, Pa./Norristown), followed by a Rozich two-RBI single to make it 3-1. Rossillo found his way across the plate two batters later to extend the lead to 4-1.

In the next frame, Rossillo singled to score Regn and make it 5-1. The designated hitter notched his second RBI on the day via a single in the bottom of the fifth, which made it 6-2 at the time.

Lock Haven made it a three-run game entering the seventh inning. Back-to-back RBI hits from Nick White and Fransico Taveras quickly made it a one run game with no outs in the seventh. With the tying run just 90 feet away, Male came up clutch, stranding the runner and recording three straight outs to secure the 6-5 win.

Game 2: Lock Haven 17, Kutztown 11
The Golden Bears committed six errors and struggled at the plate in a 17-11 game two loss.

Freshman Zack Wertman (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg) came off the bench and showed out, registering two hits, two RBI, and his first career home run. Michael Burns (Levittown, Pa./Harry S. Truman) wrapped up his great weekend with two hits and one RBI. Jason Wolff (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) hit his second home run of the season and ended with two RBI. Colin Kelly (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) also had two RBI.

Trevor Leverington (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown) took the loss for KU, while Tyler Cleveland (Pillow, Pa./Upper Dauphin), Abel Saft (Kintnersville, Pa./Moravian Academy), Gavin Grande (Newtown Square, Pa./Malvern Prep), and AJ Torres (Blandon, Pa./Fleetwood) all saw action in relief. WIll Stambaugh earned the win for Lock Haven.
