SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. -- Kutztown women's tennis remained unbeaten in PSAC East play, Friday, with a 5-2 victory at Shippensburg.
The Golden Bears (5-3, 2-0 PSAC East) won first and second doubles convincingly to secure the match's first point before winning the first three singles flights to put the match out of reach.
KU's second pairing of
Bieke Roovers (Leiden, Netherlands/Leonardo College) and
Sarah Lazarchak (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) impressed in a 6-1 win over Kendall Winters and Brinley Orris to get the Bears going. Teammates
Alejandra Vera (Manta, Ecuador/Unidad Educativa Particular) and
Emma Semery (Fuveau, France/HDN Academy) followed with a 6-2 victory over the Raiders' Corinne Markovich and Brooklyn Rupert at No. 1.
Head coach
Wyatt Pauley's team continued to roll in singles. Semery defeated Winters 6-0, 6-4 at No. 3, Vera topped Markovich 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 and Roovers took care of Rupert 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 to make it 4-0 Kutztown.
Lazarchak claimed the last of KU's points with a 6-2, 6-3 straight set win over Orris at No. 5.
Shippensburg (2-11, 0-1 PSAC East) got singles wins from Rachel Gallagher at No. 4 and Brighid Cantwell at No. 6. That duo also won third doubles after KU had already claimed the available doubles point.
Kutztown will look to take a major step towards its goal of qualifying for the postseason when it travels to Millersville for another PSAC East match on Saturday. The Marauders reached the PSAC semifinals a season ago. Match time is 1 p.m.
