WEST CHESTER, Pa. -- Kutztown University men's tennis closed its PSAC slate on a high note, Monday, defeating West Chester, 6-1.
The Golden Bears (5-8, 2-3 PSAC) came out strong, winning all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead into singles.
Joaquin Perez (Pachuca, Mexico/Escuela Americana) and
Sebastian Arizpe (Puebla, Mexico/Colegio Humboldt de Puebla) started KU off with a 6-2 win over Felix Weber and Brady Burns at No. 1, before
Dang Nguyen (Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam) and
Henrique Rocha (Jaticua, Brazil/Escola SEB Maceio) defeated Lucas Henke and Andrew Poprik by the same score at No. 2.
Emmitt Robinson (Ingersoll, Ontario/Ingersoll District Collegiate Institute) and
Justin Gincauskas (Mississauga, Ontario/Cawthra Park Secondary) completed the doubles sweep with a 6-4 victory over Cesar DeJesus-Morales and Sam Robertson at No. 3.
Kutztown continued to control the Golden Rams (1-12, 0-5 PSAC) in singles, capturing three straight points to clinch the match.
Senior
Gonzalo Barcelo (San Pedro, Argentina/Nuestra Senora del Socorro) held off Henke 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1 and Robinson was a 6-2, 6-4 winner against Weber at No. 4. Rocha's 6-3, 6-1 victory over DeJesus-Morales extended the Bears' lead to 4-0.
West Chester scored its only point via a 2-6, 6-4, 10-5 win from Burns over Perez at No. 3.
From there, KU finished off West Chester with a 6-4, 6-1 win by No. 6
Neal Devkaran (Fairfax, Va./Paul VI Catholic) and a 7-5, 6-3 triumph from No. 2 Nguyen against Andres Urrutia.
Kutztown came up one win shy of a postseason spot, ultimately having needed a victory over either Millersville or Bloomsburg. Due to not holding the tiebreaker against either the Marauders or Huskies and Edinboro having already clinched the top seed in the PSAC Championship tournament, last Friday's rained out match between KU and Edinboro will not be made up.
The Golden Bears were to face non-conference opponents Salem and Gettysburg this coming weekend but those matches have been canceled due to those schools needing to make up conference matches.
NOTE: Kutztown added a non-conference match at Penn State Harrisburg on Friday, April 26, at 3 p.m., following this release.
