KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- Kutztown University women's tennis fell to Bloomsburg, 5-2, in a PSAC East clash at the Keystone Courts Tuesday afternoon.
The Golden Bears received wins from
Bieke Roovers (Leiden, Netherlands/Leonardo College) at No. 2 singles and
Emma Semery (Fuveau, France/HDN Academy) at No. 3 singles in defeat.
Bloomsburg (10-6, 3-1 PSAC East) swept doubles while not dropping more than two games in any of the three matches to carry a 1-0 lead into singles.
Kutztown (6-7, 3-2 PSAC East) briefly tied the match behind a 6-3, 7-5 win from Roovers against Nicole Ilkovic. The victory moved Roovers over .500 on the season in singles, where she's now 7-6 while playing exclusively at No. 2.
It wasn't until the final match, with the result already in hand for the Huskies, that Semery finished off her three-set comeback victory over Dasha Nakonechna 5-7, 6-2, 6-4. Semery improved to 5-3 since joining KU prior to the spring semester.
Despite the loss, Kutztown battled at a number of flights. No. 1
Alejandra Vera (Manta, Ecuador/Unidad Educativa Particular) went to a first set tiebreaker against Lexi Quackenbush, while senior
Sarah Lazarchak (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) claimed nine games in a hard-fought match against Jen McDonald that went to McDonald by 7-5, 6-4 scores.
No. 6
Mallory Barndt (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) extended her second set against Alyssa Mazurek to a tiebreaker before falling 6-1, 7-6 (3).
Kutztown will play its final two home matches of the regular season this weekend against PSAC West foes Edinboro (Friday) and Mercyhurst (Saturday).
