LIMERICK, Pa. -- No. 22 Kutztown women's bowling captured three more wins, Sunday, ultimately bringing home a sixth-place finish at the Griffin Baker Classic.
The Golden Bears used 900+ games to best Caldwell and Long Island in close matches to close out the seeding rounds.
Against Caldwell,
Sydney Snyder (Morrisville, Pa./Conwell-Egan Catholic),
Meghan Ripley (Bel Air, Md./Fallston),
Megan Hanaway (Forked River, N.J./Lacey Township),
Madison Brenneman (York, Pa./Central York) and
Chloe Sromovski (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./G.A.R. Memorial) comprised Kutztown's (33-16) lineup. They put up consistent scores throughout before finishing with a match-high 197 to grab a 914-847 victory.
That same lineup also produced a 907-889 win over LIU but not without some late drama. KU outscored the Sharks by 34 in the first game (189-155), 32 in the third (201-169) and 35 in the fourth (179-144) to build a sizable lead, before LIU drew within 20 pins by the end with a 228-168 advantage in game five. Despite the late comeback attempt, the Golden Bears held on.
At the conclusion of seeding play, Kutztown sat fifth with a score of 6,421 (183.5 average).
Angela Reynolds' squad went into best-of-seven bracket play with the chance to finish anywhere between fifth and eighth.
A rematch with eighth-seeded LIU greeted KU first. The Sharks were up to the task, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the series before Kutztown answered with two straight wins to even it. Using the same lineup it had earlier in the day, KU was again forced to rally after dropping game five. With their backs against the wall, the Bears dug deep to emerge with a 192-176 win in game six and a 202-190 triumph in the decisive seventh game to win the series, 4-3.
Ally Sipe (York, Pa./Central York) was inserted for the fifth-place match against Mercyhurst and while Kutztown put up a trio of 200+ games, Mercyhurst's early surge proved too much in a 4-1 defeat. The Lakers rolled a 255, 217 and 212 to open a 3-0 lead. KU extended the series with a 203-175 win in game four but Mercyhurst won game five 188-174.
No. 24 Delaware State, who Kutztown beat head-to-head Saturday, won the tournament with a 4-0 sweep of Belmont Abbey in the championship match. Wilmington (Del.) topped Bryant in the third-place match.
Kutztown will compete in Pennsylvania for just the third time this season next weekend when they travel to the Mount Shootout. Even though Emmittsburg, Maryland-based Mount St. Mary's is the host, the tournament is being played at Clearview Lanes in Mount Joy, Pa.
