MOUNT JOY, Pa. -- Kutztown won its first two best-of-seven Baker matches before running into a red-hot Alvernia team, Sunday, and settling for a 10th-place finish at the Mount Shootout.
The Golden Bears (40-22) avenged a Friday loss to Howard by dispatching of the Bison in six games. Kutztown twice had to overcome one-game deficits but did so with a 201-185 win in game two and a 178-159 victory in game four. The lineup of
Megan Hanaway (Forked River, N.J./Lacey Township),
Ally Sipe (York, Pa./Central York),
Meghan Ripley (Bel Air, Md./Fallston),
Alyssa Blood (Birdsboro, Pa./Daniel Boone) and
Chloe Sromovski (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./G.A.R. Memorial) took the final two games to win the series, 4-2.
Kutztown once again found itself behind the eight ball against Chestnut Hill. The Griffins supplied back-to-back 200+ games to take a 2-0 series lead and pushed their advantage to 3-1 following a 227-210 win in game four.
Sydney Snyder (Morrisville, Pa./Conwell-Egan Catholic) joined Sipe, Hanaway, Blood and Sromovski as KU stormed back with three consecutive 200+ games of its own to claim the match, 4-3, and earn its 40th win of the season. The Bears won game five 236-169, game six in close fashion 211-205 and the decisive game seven by a 213-194 score.
Angela Reynolds' team continued to bowl well against Alvernia, but the Golden Wolves did just enough to tough out three wins before putting the match away in a sweep. Game one was decided by a single pin, 222-221, while games two and three finished with 231-214 and 237-208 victories for Alvernia. The Golden Wolves topped KU 202-159 in the clincher.
Kutztown will compete for a fourth consecutive weekend when it takes part in the Wilmington-hosted Wildcat Invitational at Bowlerama in New Castle, Del., Feb. 16-18.
