Kutztown holds on to beat Wilmington for second straight win

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University men's basketball team topped the Wilmington Wildcats 95-88 in a non conference meeting on Saturday night at Keystone Arena.

Senior guard Jalen Bryant (Edgewood, Md./John Carroll) paved the way for a Golden Bears (3-4 overall) victory, scoring 28 points and hitting on all 15 of his free throw attempts. A game that featured an alarming rate of fouls ended up hurting Wilmington (1-6 overall) in the end, as their 32 fouls eclipsed their season high and forced the game to be decided from the charity stripe.

The seven Golden Bears sent to the free throw line made at least one attempt, as Juju Pagan (Tobyhanna, Pa./Pocono Mountain West) went 7-for-8 and Jordan Nkoa Abessolo (Yaoundé, Cameroon/St. Maria Goretti (Md.)) scored on six of his eight attempts. The Wildcats forced 34 second-half free throw attempts, but their efforts to mount a comeback were crushed by Kutztown's 82 percent clip from the line.

Four KU players scored in double digits, as Bryant's mark was complimented by Tyler Koenig's (Waldwick, N.J./Pioneer Academy) 16 points, Pagan's 15 and Nkoa Abessolo's 14. Nkoa Abessolo and Koenig combined for 17 of Kutztown's 36 rebounds in a strong day for the Golden Bear big men.

The Golden Bears caught Wilmington off guard with 20 fast break points, while they forced their opponents into foul trouble to seal the win. As a team, the Maroon and Gold shot nearly 60 percent from the field, starting the game with an accurate attack to lead the charge from the jump.

The Golden Bears stay home at Keystone Arena for their Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference home opener against Slippery Rock on Friday, Dec. 6 at 5 p.m.
