Box Score WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's soccer team was featured in another defense-heavy, Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Division battle against West Chester, where the Golden Bears and Golden Rams were both held scoreless in a 0-0 draw on Wednesday afternoon at Rockwell Field.
The Golden Bears (8-1-5, 6-1-5 PSAC East) weathered a strong West Chester (8-4-1, 7-4-1 PSAC East) offensive attack to hand the Golden Rams their first draw of the season. Kutztown's defensive unit, led by graduate defender
Dana Wentz (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley) and senior defender
Bridget Curtis (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South), held together to make things tough for an aggressive West Chester attack that came off of a 6-0 win against Mansfield over the weekend.
While KU led in total shot attempts (14-12), it was West Chester that made it challenging for freshman goalkeeper
Cassidy Howes (Havre de Grace, Md./Havre de Grace), who saved all nine on-target shots on the day to record her fourth shutout in the past five outings.
The chippy game was evident in the box score, with the teams combining for 18 total fouls – 11 by the Golden Rams. Kutztown continued its domination on the corner of the field, leading the game in corner kicks, 8-5. The Golden Bears had five of their 14 shots on frame on the afternoon. Graduate midfielder
Taylor Rapel (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) attempted a team-high three shots, with one being on target and saved by West Chester's Grace Keen.
With the draw, Kutztown picks up a point in the PSAC East Division standings and ties Shepherd at the top of the table. Shepherd takes the pitch against Millersville at 6 p.m. later Wednesday night. West Chester remains a point behind Kutztown and is now in third place in the division.
Kutztown will try to get an advantage on Shepherd when the two play in a pivotal conference matchup at the Shepherd Soccer Complex on Saturday, Oct. 26, at noon. The Golden Bears open their final regular season homestand with a Wednesday night game against Bloomsburg on Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. at Keystone Field.
